MondoMagna Forest Blue transforms the familiar shapes of trees, branches and exposed roots into an imagined woodland of sweeping lines, flattened colour and unexpected pattern.
The original painting has been simplified into bold areas of river blue, deep green, turquoise, soft violet and flashes of fuchsia, set against a chalk-white ground. Polka dots appear unexpectedly amongst the roots and foliage, interrupting the more painterly areas of colour and giving the landscape a distinctly graphic character.
Rather than depicting the woodland literally, the design plays with its shapes and proportions. Tree trunks stretch vertically through the composition while an oversized foreground tree and its spreading roots cut dramatically across the scarf.
Printed on lightweight silk chiffon, the design changes as it is folded and draped, breaking the woodland into abstract fragments of branches, colour and pattern.
